This book therefore focuses on several further factors that determine the ethnically exclusionary character of current peripheral growth in the Tibetan areas. These include processes of urbanization, immigration, employment, and education as key factors underlying structural economic change.5/5(1).

This book provides insight into the signficant economic disparities suffered by the Tibetan people. Statistics from China are considered by many sources to be biased and not accurate, and pro-Tibet supporters are difficult to take at face value as well, however this text seems to project the true state of affairs as completely and honestly as possible.5/5(1).

State Growth and Social Exclusion in Tibet: Challenges of Recent Economic Growth. The most pressing economic challenges facing the Tibetan areas of western China relate to the marginalization of the majority of Tibetans from rapid state-led growth.

Illiteracy rates in the Tibetan urban areas are almost as high as rural illiteracy rates. Tibetans have experienced polarisation and exclusion in the urban areas.

The potential emergence of a Tibetan underclass appears as a contradiction to state focus on urban growth strategies and the drive for western development. The study draws generally from the analytical framework of social exclusion and is based on extensive use of official Chinese statistics, focusing on the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai but with numerous comparisons to the other provinces of western China.
